Bobbitt

Another case of Bobbitt, this time in Malaysia.

Look at the positive side. If your New Year's resolution is to lose some weight in 2005, well, you are already a few ounces lighter even before 2005 arrives.

Me mismanaging patient?? U must be kidding..

Pulled aside during the ward round this morning by my consultant . Was told-off big time by Dr E.

Patient had not received his antibiotic for a few days, and according to Dr E, I haven't done anything about it.

Sorry sir. I'm not to be blamed. The antibiotic has already been prescribed, as per his instruction. Administering it was the nurses' responsibility. If they had any problems giving the drug to the poor patient, they should have contacted me. And they clearly hadn't. I can't go round every day, checking if the nurses have done their job.

Wait..wait...Haven't they just employed a third matron?? Are the matrons still working, or have they all gone celebrating New Year???

Can't help but feel being blamed because I'm the most junior member of Dr E's team.
Sigh!!!

X'MAS TORTURE @ WORK

X'mas and Boxing Day this year were meant to be a blessing for all. As they fell on a Saturday and Sunday respectively, the following Monday and Tuesday were declared as extra holidays. In another words, for the majority lucky ones, it meant 4 consecutive days off.

But unfortunately for me, I was on-call on Monday. I was tasked to look after approx, 200 patients in the hospital, all on my own!! My bleep went of a total of 36 times over a 12 hour-shift. Nurses from a ward would bleep me, very politely informing me that "There're a few tiny jobs for you on Ward 4/6/7". Sick patients to be reviewed, IV fluid & laxatives to be prescribed, the deceased needed to be certified dead etc etc.

I wonder why can't the hospital operate like other emergency services. Have you ever heard a fireman says during a fire, "Hey sorry mate! It's bank hol, and I'm the only one on duty. Can't attend to the fire now". Or when you tried to call for police after a break-in, and he said "Come back tommorrow to make the report, we're short of staff today"

I sincerely tried my best to attend to all patients who needed my help that day. But I must admit: if I had the luxury of time, I could have spend more time with each of them, sorting out their problems.

Surely the management could spare some money to pay the doctors to do overtimes. Or is this another cost-cutting measure by the NHS, at the expense of patients' care?

LOSING MY VIRGINITY

Well..at last I've decided to jump on the blog bandwagon! I've been reading lots of blogs, and everyone seems to have an INTERESTING life, always with lots of different wonderful stories.
I'm a junior doctor, working in a small district general hospital somewhere in England. I don't have an interesting social life (ie I don't do alcohol, gambling, drugs). My life is centred around my daily work in the hospital.
I hope to share with you my experience working in a hospital. Happy reading!

P/S: I wanted to publish the hospital name at first. On 2nd thought, I think I'd rather not, for fear of repercussions. I'm a Defensive Medical Practitioner!!
